Dear NCSY SUMMER TJJ BUS 11 Parents,
Sunday was a wonderful day full of quality of fun and educational experiences. We started with a session learning about the biblical color of indigo (techelet) and then went to the beautiful Mediterranean to try and find the unique snails that provide the dye. We then conducted a chemistry experiment actually dying wool the biblical colors of purple (argamon) and techelet.
After the beach, we went to Bar Ilan University to hear from a professor on Israel advocacy. It was an eye opening experience that was informative and important for the teens to hear before going back overseas. They questioned and enjoyed the talk very much.
The day ended with one of the most spiritual moments of the trip so far. Upon entering Jerusalem the teens were glued to the windows as they took in the their first glimpse of the city.
Continuing to the Old City, the energy continued rising. Prior to the descent to the Kotel (the Western Wall), I spoke to the teens about the concept of mourning the loss of the temple and what our response should be. If mourning happens when there is a loss of potential (ie. death) our response should be to actualize our potential.
The teens who haven’t been to the Kotel before were guided with their eyes closed down to the plaza until they opened them one by one. A video of the experience is on Facebook. Tears were common amongst many of the teens and it was really moving to watch as they wrote their notes upon their descent to the Wall.
What an amazing day!
